A Simple, Inexpensive, Wearable Glove with Hybrid Resistive‐Pressure Sensors for Computational Sensing, Proprioception, and Task Identification
Josie Hughes*, Andrew Spielberg*, Mark Chounlakone*, Gloria Chang, Wojciech Matusik, Daniela Rus | MIT CSAIL
Using fluidic and resistive sensor inputs, MemGlove collects data which is then routed through MLP and LSTM neural networks to produce outputs reflecting the state of the user and the environment. Published in Advanced Intelligent Systems, the authors show object, stiffness, and handwritten letter classification, as well as temperature, force, hand pose, and heart rate estimation capabilities in a wearable glove.

A Study of Newness in the Disaster Field
Gloria Chang | GSD
This work focuses on the condition of newness in disaster response. Newness refers to the state of being relatively recent, novel, unfamiliar, or different from previous versions. Through interviews and surveys, 22 disaster responders with a wide range of roles within disaster response organizations were asked to discuss their experiences regarding the new aspects of disasters, as well as new efforts within the responses.
Combined, these respondents gave 27 accounts of response efforts, covering 17 environmental, infrastructural, health, and conflict-based disasters of different scales and geographies. Within these, I have explored respondent characterizations of newness, examined the relationship between newness, preparedness, and effectiveness, and consolidated respondent suggestions for an all hazards, vulnerability based approach to disaster preparedness. This study of newness finds that it is implemented through very context dependent processes, reveals organizational risk aversion, and interacts significantly with the other components of a disaster response effort.

Youth Voices Magazine
Gloria Chang (Editor) | US Peace Corps
Student-oriented magazine to encourage literacy and reading culture. Volunteers and teachers from all over Rwanda participated, and trainings were conducted on various types of creative writing, with exercises and ideas for their classes. The students wrote on a subject of their choice, and sent them in for publishing. Funding from the USG made it possible for to deliver on-site trainings, and to print and distribute the magazine at no cost to all 1200+ participants in all four provinces.
